Salinas Community
Science Workshop

"Tools in your hands!"

Welcome

Imagine a world where every kid had access to the tools and materials necessary to build the projects of their imaginations.

The Salinas Community Science Workshop makes that dream a reality for the kids of Salinas. At the Science Workshop, kids and families can use tools and explore the world with science in a free and fascinating environment.

What you can do here

Nearly anything you want! Come have a look at our tools and materials and think about what you want to do. Common projects are wood construction (shelves, boxes, etc.); simple electrical circuits with motors, lights, buzzers and magnets; puzzles and toys; planters; throwing machines; bike and scooter repair and modification; slime, oobleck and volcanoes; cars, airplanes and boats; and both water and air rockets.

SS wow
workshop on wheels

We have a full-sized MST bus we call the Salinas Science Workshop on Wheels. It’s outfitted as a mobile workshop, complete with exhibits, tools and materials – a mini version of our main site. The SS WOW can visit schools, events and neighborhood spaces.

Currently we’re seeking support to take it to the weekly spot where it’s been the last 2 years: Cesar Chavez Library. The SS WOW has also made many visits to many  of the elementary schools of Salinas.

testimonials

“I learned how to solder and use hand tools and drills. Another benefit of going to the Workshop is spending time with your friends:  if you do not want to go home early, just drop by with your friends and make some new cool things or build one of the models that are on the model wall.” – Pedro
