"Tools in your hands!"

our programs

Open structure drop-in hours

The heart of our Science Workshop is the open structure drop-in program, open after school and on Saturdays and school vacations. Kids of all ages are welcomed into the Workshop and SS WoW with their families to pursue the projects of their imaginations, or just to explore the exhibits and use the science instruments.

Science Workshop Family Nights

All families are welcome on the second Friday of each month, 5:00 to 7:30.  We’ll have special projects, presentation and food.  ¡Bienvenid@s a tod@s!

Class visits to the Workshop

On school days classes come walking or by bus to the Workshop where they interact with the exhibits and then carry out a hands-on project related to the curriculum they’re studying. Teachers accompany their students and learn hands-on pedagogy as well as science concepts.

Teacher professional development

We work with teachers or afterschool facilitators, giving training on NGSS-linked topics and preparing sets of tools and materials or exhibits sufficient to carry out an activity in their own classrooms.

STEAM Gxrls Group

Every Wednesday at lunch, the Science Workshop is open to girls interested in building things and exploring with science. Past projects have been wearable LED circuits, slime and custom wooden scooters

Salinas Science Workshop on Wheels

Our full-sized MST bus includes the basic elements of a Science Workshop, all ready to roll up to a site such as a park, school, library, or community center and opened for use by kids or families there. The SS WoW can make any project possible for the participants over a period of days or weeks.

Class Kits

We design and create class kits, both individual projects and sets of projects on a theme.  These kits are unique NGSS-based make-and-take toys that put tools in kids’ hands, and come with a loaner tool box for the class.

Science events

SCSW can carry out Family Science Nights or Science Days at schools, science and tinkering booths at community events, and science presentations for special occasions.  Contact us for details!

Physics Bus/ScienceMobile

We can borrow the mobile museums of our sister sites full of a variety of hands-on, Exploratorium-like exhibits for kids to interact with. Exhibits are mounted inside the vehicle and others are set up around the periphery to serve many kids at once.

Field trips

We organize trips for kids and families to local science-significant locations, for example to local museums, natural sites, or educational events. We also lead occasional camping trips and star parties.

SCSW can serve several other community science education needs as well:

Citizen/Community science projects
If youth or families of the community are interested in learning more or contributing to research on a topic of local importance such as neighborhood health or environmental issues, the SCSW can coordinate and organize this sort of project and link the community to regional experts in the field.
School-based after school

Workshop staff can bring necessary tools and materials to carry out a hands-on make-and-take activity with the students in an afterschool program at a school.
